Eccentricity
was a lifestyle choice for the young, intelligent, sensitive -- and
often over-looked -- Emily Dickinson, portrayed in a tender one-woman
show playing at the Portland Civic Theater Blue Room. Former
Portlander Mary Wadkins' dynamic performance reveals Emily's
complex character as she shares her wry wit, ambitions and
heartbreaks with her "guests". The script, fashioned
from the letters and poetry of Dickinson by Portland native William
Luce, provides the very talented Wadkins with everything she need to
bring the poet to credible life. She particularly shines in the
second act, during which the poet confronts life's disappointments,
losses and ultimate confusion, with her simple, unaffected
performance. The result is moving. Every poetry student in
town should see this show. |
